Sweet & Smoky: Homemade Blackberry BBQ Sauce with a Kick

As I stand in my garden, surrounded by rows of vibrant blackberry bushes, I can’t help but smile at the abundance of fruit. There’s something incredibly satisfying about harvesting fresh ingredients right from your own homestead. Blackberries, with their deep color and sweet-tart flavor, are one of my favorites. I never tire of them, whether I’m making jam, desserts, or something savory like this Blackberry BBQ Sauce.

The inspiration for this sauce came from a need to use up the overflowing blackberry harvest in a way that could complement the savory meals I often cook on the grill. I wanted to create something that balanced the natural sweetness of the berries with a bit of heat and smokiness, perfect for brushing over chicken, pork, or even grilled vegetables. After a little experimenting with the right combination of spices, the result was exactly what I had hoped for: a medium-heat BBQ sauce with a rich, fruity base, a hint of smoky chipotle, and a subtle kick.

There’s something special about using ingredients you’ve grown yourself. Not only does this sauce add a personal touch to every meal, but it also makes me appreciate the simple pleasure of cooking with what’s available in season. Whether you’re grilling with friends or enjoying a quiet meal at home, this Blackberry BBQ Sauce is a great way to bring a little piece of my homestead into your kitchen. It’s a delicious blend of sweet, savory, and smoky, with just the right amount of heat to keep you coming back for more.

Ingredients

Units Scale

1 cup fresh or frozen blackberries

1/2 cup ketchup

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

3 tbsp brown sugar

2 tbsp honey

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp smoked paprika

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

12 chipotle peppers in adobo, finely chopped (adjust for heat preference)

Optional: 1-2 tsp molasses for deeper flavor

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, add blackberries, vinegar, and brown sugar. Simmer for 5 minutes, breaking down the berries with a spoon.

  2. Add remaining ingredients and stir to combine. Bring to a low simmer.

  3. Let the sauce cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
