Prosciutto and Havarti Asparagus Bites with Balsamic Drizzle

There’s something magical about the combination of fresh asparagus, delicate prosciutto, and creamy Havarti cheese. This appetizer has become a staple at my gatherings, and every time I serve it, the response is the same: “Is there more?” The crispness of the asparagus, the saltiness of the prosciutto, and the richness of the cheese create a delightful harmony of flavors. A drizzle of balsamic glaze adds a touch of sweetness and acidity, elevating the dish to new heights.

What I love most about this recipe is its simplicity and elegance. It’s easy to prepare yet feels special enough for any occasion. Whether it’s a casual get-together or a festive celebration, these bites never fail to impress. They’re a testament to the fact that sometimes, the best things come in small, flavorful packages

Ingredients

  • Fresh asparagus spears: 12 spears (approximately 1 bunch)
  • Prosciutto slices: 6 slices (each slice cut in half lengthwise)
  • Havarti cheese slices: 6 slices (cut into strips to match the length of the asparagus)
  • Balsamic glaze: 2 tablespoons
  • Toothpicks: 6

Instructions

Prepare the Asparagus:

  • Wash and trim the woody ends of the asparagus spears.
  • Par-cook the asparagus by blanching them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes until they are bright green and slightly tender.
  • Immediately transfer the asparagus to an ice bath to halt the cooking process.
  • Once cooled, pat them dry with a paper towel.

Assemble the Bites:

  • Lay a slice of prosciutto flat on a clean surface.
  • Place a strip of Havarti cheese on top of the prosciutto.
  • Place a par-cooked asparagus spear at one end of the prosciutto and cheese slices.
  • Roll the prosciutto and cheese around the asparagus spear, securing it with a toothpick.

Serve:

  • Arrange the assembled bites on a serving platter.
  • Just before serving, drizzle with balsamic glaze for added flavor and a touch of elegance.

Notes

Ingredient Substitutions:

  • Prosciutto Alternatives: If prosciutto isn’t available, thinly sliced deli ham can be a suitable substitute. It offers a similar savory flavor and wraps well around the asparagus.
  • Cheese Variations: While Havarti cheese provides a creamy texture, you can experiment with other soft white cheeses like mozzarella or Swiss. For a tangier flavor, consider using softened cream cheese, goat cheese, or Boursin. Spreading a thin layer of these cheeses on the prosciutto before wrapping adds an extra layer of flavor.

🔥 Serving Temperature Options:

  • Chilled Version: Par-cooking the asparagus and serving the bites chilled is perfect for warm days. The asparagus retains its crispness, and the appetizer can be prepared ahead of time, making it convenient for gatherings.
  • Warm Version: If you prefer a warm appetizer, you can bake the assembled bites in a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) for about 10-12 minutes, or until the prosciutto is slightly crispy and the cheese is melted. This variation offers a comforting, savory experience.

🌿 Additional Tips:

  • Asparagus Preparation: Blanching the asparagus for 2-3 minutes in boiling water, followed by an ice bath, helps maintain its vibrant green color and crisp texture.
  • Secure Wrapping: Using toothpicks not only secures the prosciutto and cheese around the asparagus but also makes for easy serving and eating.
  • Flavor Enhancements: For added flavor, consider sprinkling lemon zest or freshly ground black pepper over the assembled bites before serving.

Feel free to adapt these tips to suit your taste and the preferences of your guests. Enjoy crafting this elegant and versatile appetizer!  Share your comments on how you made it your signature dish! 💙
